Greens
Gain at County Elections (5 June 2009) The Green Party is celebrating
a great set of results in the County Council elections held yesterday.
In Colchester, we polled 10.3% of the vote across the whole of the Borough, a
figure that reached 18% in Abbey Division where Linda Wonnacott came second to
the Liberal Democrat candidate. The Greens polled more votes than Labour in six
out of the nine divisions in the borough. We were close to a breakthrough
to Essex County Council in nearby Witham Northern, where James Abbott polled 23%,
beaten only by the Conservative candidate. Elsewhere in the East of England,
Greens are celebrating winning eight new county council seats, including five
in Norfolk, two in Suffolk and one in Cambridgeshire.

Election Campaign (24 May 2009)
Rev
Billy with Green Party European Parliament candidate, Peter Lynn American
comedian and social activist the Reverend
Billy is backing the Green Party to win a European Parliament seat in the
East of England. Rev Billy, who performed at Colchester Arts Centre on Sunday,
thinks the Greens are poised to gain their first MEP in the region. At his Sunday
show he endorsed the Greens' campaign and wished good luck to Peter Lynn, who
is one of the Green candidates in the June 4 Euro election and is the only candidate
of any party to come from Colchester. Rev Billy is the second well known
comedian and campaigner to have both appeared at Colchester Arts Centre and endorsed
the Green Party's Eastern region campaign. Mark Thomas, who performed in Colchester
in both 2007 and 2008, has been actively
supporting the Green Euro campaign. The Rev Billy, who appeared with
his "Life after Shopping" choir, is well known for his support of independent
local traders and for opposing the power of multinational corporations. He hit
the headlines for a successful campaign against Starbucks' attempts to prevent
Ethiopian coffee growers from trademarking their produce. He first came to the
public's attention for his flamboyant speeches and singing in Times Square, New
York, and he is now the Green Party candidate for Mayor of New York. In his Colchester
show he urged the audience to "back off from Tesco," to support local shops, and
to value friends and neighbours. The Rev's visit to Colchester was part
of a whistle-stop tour of ten UK venues. While in Colchester he also hosted a
picnic in a disused church, to which local traders, artists and Green Party members
were invited. Manifest Launch (22 May 2009)On Friday 22nd May the

Party's manifesto for Essex was launched. The manifesto is available here. News
